NBC Bay Area News Story reports on Quinn's Kids Program
The Quinn Boyer Memorial Foundation, Inc.
To keep his memory alive, to achieve hope and healing for us and for our youth
On April 2, 2013, Quinn Boyer, (34), was murdered by a group of teenagers ranging in age from 13 to 16. He was shot during an attempted car-jacking in the Oakland Hills. Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan described the crime as part of "a disturbing trend in this city" in which juveniles as young as 13 have been involved in violent crimes. Jordan called on parents, the schools and the community to change the cycle. Quinn's Kids is our attempt the change that cycle.
Quinn believed strongly in the inherent potential for growth and transformation in every young person. At camp, he saw first-hand the positive changes that can occur when kids experience a completely new environment, one far removed from a sub-culture of isolation, violence and devaluation of human life.
Quinn's Kids provides multi-year camperships for Bay Area youth at CYO Summer Camp in Occidental, CA. Our campers are boys and girls whose lives can be positively impacted by their experiences at camp but lack the means or support to participate. They learn and practice respect, understanding, and personal responsibility while developing self-confidence and awareness of their individual strengths and talents. Our campers are exposed to a larger community, one with youth and counselors from various cultural, social and financial backgrounds. They begin to see a place for themselves in this bigger world.
Quinn's Kids return to camp, year after year, continuing to develop life skills that will help them find meaningful, responsible roles in adult life. They become part of a larger family that works to build both individual and community strengths.
And did we mention they have a great time? Camp activities include exploring nature in the coastal redwoods, canoeing, playing games, swimming, and crafts -- all while making new friends from across the Bay Area and finding mentors among the experienced counselors and staff.
